RTP and Volatility, Explained Without the Jargon

Two numbers quietly shape every slot session. Understand RTP and volatility and you'll choose games that match how you actually like to play.

Every slot is governed by two numbers most players never check: RTP and volatility. Learn what they mean and you can pick games that fit your bankroll and your temperament — instead of leaving it to chance.

RTP: the long-run payback

Return to Player is the percentage of all wagers a game pays back over millions of spins. A 96% RTP slot returns €96 for every €100 staked across its lifetime — not your session.

  • 96%+ is healthy. Many top slots sit at 96–97%.
  • Below 94% and the house edge is working harder against you.

RTP says nothing about a single session — it's the long-run tide, not today's wave. That's where volatility comes in.

Volatility: the shape of the ride

Volatility (or variance) describes how a game pays:

VolatilityWhat it feels likeSuits
LowFrequent small winsLong, steady sessions
MediumA balance of bothMost players
HighRare but large winsBonus hunters, big swings

Two slots can share a 96% RTP and feel completely different. A low-volatility game trickles wins back; a high-volatility one can go cold for 100 spins, then hand you 500x.

Match the game to your goal

  • Stretching a budget for entertainment? Low volatility, high RTP.
  • Clearing a wagering requirement? Lower volatility keeps your balance alive longer (see our wagering guide).
  • Chasing a big hit and happy to risk it? High volatility — but size your stakes for long dry spells.

A quick word on "due" payouts

No slot is ever "due." Every spin is independent, and RTP only emerges over enormous samples. Volatility explains the swings you feel; it never makes a win owed to you.

Put it to use

Good casinos publish RTP on every game page — our top-rated Aurelia does it as standard. Check those two numbers before you spin, and you'll always know what kind of ride you signed up for.
